Francesco Zorzi (IT, 1985) is an artist placed at the convergence between formal and conceptual, exploring human condition and everyday life events in the context of contemporary society, following a research where perception, intuition and memory play an essential role. FZ explores new connections between the art world and his personal fascinations with scientific knowledge, combined together in open systems with which the audience can relate for investigating both their inner worlds and their surroundings. The body of work in his current artistic research focuses on the limits of human perception and the blurry boundaries of our sensorial experience, the image of the self and the image of reality in connection with the latest discoveries in quantum physics and their representation of the world. His formal research is characterized by an abundance of materials and techniques, informed by his background in applied arts and further conceptualized within art. In a constant balance between control and spontaneity, order and turmoil, tending to free-floating forms, he integrates new modalities of visual composition, gestural expressionism and meticulous formal re-configurations. It is a process in which one action leads to the next in an ongoing echo that has much to do with reacting rather than acting. FZ’s work goes beyond the single format of the art medium, ranging from large-scale paintings, drawings, object-like sculptures and installations, often in conversation with each other and creating multiple configurations and parallel narratives. In 2018 he is awarded with the Tiffany Co. Italian Fellowship at the prestigious American Academy in Rome (IT) and receives a grant from the Embassy Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Italy (NL) for the project Macula - The Theater is in The Mind. The work is an ongoing exploration of the correlation between distorted vision and distorted perception, Age-Macular Degeneration and the fictive visual perceptions of the Charles Bonnet Syndrome. FZ’s work has been presented nationally and internationally, among others at Art City NDSM (NL), American Academy in Rome (IT), Lago Film Festiva (IT). His work is installed in public space in Amsterdam (NL), Azores (PT), Rome (IT). In conjunction with his artistic practice, he teaches at MADE Program in Siracusa (IT). He is currently based in Amsterdam.
